I was watching my friend Simon throw pots the other day. There he was, hands the size of dinner plates, hunched over his foot-powered wheel, gently coaxing a lump of brown clay into something useful and beautiful. Simon exhibits internationally, derives enormous pleasure from his craft, and has an appreciative and growing following. He has no intention of being on YouTube.

Simon’s clay has the advantage of intent. He wants it dense, pliable, unstructured. My clay, not so much.

The difference between us is that Simon calls his a raw material. I’m calling mine a soil.

This is not the image that regenerative agriculture tends to project online. The YouTube algorithm rewards transformation arcs, not honest timelines. The soil is a prop. And you, to be clear, are the crop.

What the science says

The Rodale Institute published a position paper this spring worth reading — forty-odd years of rigorous farming systems research distilled into something that is, by the standards of ag lit (to coin a phrase), almost aggressively honest. Soil health has a credibility problem, they argue. Too many claims, not enough proof. As carbon markets start attaching real money to soil outcomes, vague assertions about regenerative practice aren’t going to survive contact with an auditor. You need repeatable, comparable measurement across years. Not a close-up of a worm. Data.

Their six principles are sound. The interesting content is in the caveats. No-till applied to already-compacted, poorly-drained clay “may behave very differently” than on a well-structured silt loam. Minimum disturbance applied to a soil that is already locked-up can simply preserve the problem in aspic.

Which raises a question Rodale doesn’t answer with thousands of peer-reviewed citations and a growing body of field evidence, why does biochar get so little attention in mainstream organic and regenerative agriculture?

The amendment hiding in plain sight

Biochar can be made with a Kon-Tiki pit kiln, converting agricultural brash that would otherwise be openly incinerated into stable carbon amendment. No infrastructure. No supplier. Less smoke. Better soil.

David Hughes and his PlantVillage team have been doing exactly this across Kenya and beyond — training smallholder farmers to turn invasive problem plants into biochar feedstock, certifying the resulting carbon credits under Carbon Standards International, and returning 95% of carbon credit revenue directly to the workers producing it. The OECD voluntary carbon market standard sits higher still, and cooperatives are doing the aggregation work to get farmers there.

The mission is straightforward and quietly enormous: reverse climate change, feed the planet, and level up the farmers in the developing world who are bearing the worst of what we’ve already done to it.

The farming you don’t see

Soil doesn’t do transformation arcs. It does slow, incremental, often invisible functional change that only becomes legible when you’ve been measuring the same thing in the same place for long enough to see a trend.

The glacier this farm is named for is retreating visibly above the valley, season by season. The soil below is moving in the other direction, slowly, on no fixed schedule.

Simon’s pots aren’t finished in an afternoon. Shaped, they must dry slowly, then glaze, then fire. The land too takes time to recover and reveal its hidden powers.

Some things can’t be rushed. The useful and beautiful ones least of all.
